FAQ to the Future

Time to jump in your Delorian and get that puppy up to 88.8 mph as fast as you can, the Blood Angels and Tyranids FAQs came out today. Oh wait, everyone with a blog has already talked about this ad nauseum- fuck. Looks like everybody beat me to the punch because I had the most pointless final* ever to study for. I'll cut right to the chase and just throw both of my middle fingers up in the air and shout a big "I told you so" to the members of the gaming community responsible for such Friday Night Internet Fights as the great Mawloc kerfuffle of 2010 and the 2nd annual Demolisher Cannon fest among others. So you're all a bunch of idiots and need to learn the rules better and spot obvious designer oversights. RAI FTW bitches!

===============================================================

* So Econ 403 where 70% of your grade is determined by a series of online quizzes that can be taken an unlimited number of times. Honestly, if I showed up and wrote my name on the final and had drawn a couple of graphs I would have finished the class with a B. Yet people still complained that the class was hard. A course that didn't even scratch the surface of a subject that undergraduate courses look at in detail is hard? Holy shit. So anyway, I think I destroyed that test and am looking forward to my second 100% score in a class as a graduate student. Way to raise the bar on graduate education Roosevelt University.

Scatter Template Calculator

Holy crap, one of the other YTTH writers actually put up something interesting. You should go check out Purgatus' work on developing a post entitled Scattering Templates: The Calculator. I won't get into the specifics here, as you can easily click the link, but this is a pretty impressive piece of math wizardry. There is some debate as to how accurate some of the calculations are, but it still serves as a good rough estimate of your chances of hitting various vehicles with the center of a blast template given either BS3 or BS4.

EEEEradicator!!!

I finally got some pictures taken of the Eradicators that you guys named. If you hadn't already figured it out, all of my Cadian tanks are named after AC/DC songs. I've got almost 30 tanks done and haven't even come close to running out of names. It's pretty great, I must say. The picture up top here is a group shot of all 3 tanks I finished. Since there was a tie for 2nd place with the names, I added a Demolisher that I had been needing to paint to my batch and gave him the 3rd name.

So to see more pictures of "Snowballed," "Stiff Upper Lip," and "Squealer" check out the halls of infamy.

If you're interested, you can also see a WIP tutorial I did on some of the techniques I misused.

Tobacco

US artist Tobacco released a new album "Maniac Meat" at the end of May. If you're not familiar with his work- which you're not in all likelihood- Tobacco is Tom Fec, the front man of Black Moth Super Rainbow (BMSR). As with his other band, Tobacco is centered around a completely analog synth sound recorded on all analog equipment. This makes for a very thick sound that you can't get with digital pro tools bullshit these days. Unlike BMSR, Tobacco is focused on a slightly darker sound and tends to shy away from pop hooks and go more the glitchy electronics that you have probably figured out that I'm into.

2008 saw the release of his first album, "Fucked Up Friends," which was released to quite a lot of critical acclaim and featured a guest appearance by Aesop Rock. That album was great, but if anything the new album surpasses it musically. The synth work is phenomenal as it treads a fine line between playing and sequencing its parts. Beck also joins the show to add guest vocals on 2 of the standout tracks on the album. If you're a fan of Stereolab or Add (n) to X (fair warning on that last video: it's totally NSFW and does actually have nekkid boobs in it, so you're warned that it's the greatest music video of all time), you'll like Tobacco.

Here's the first song off of the newest album "Constellation Dirt Bike Head"

And here is one of the songs featuring Beck- "Fresh Hex"

Last this is "Sweatmother" which somebody has set to 80s aerobic workout tapes for some reason. The first time I hear this I thought my iPod fucked up and had put on NIN's "Terrible Lie" for a second.

Friday Night Internet Fight, Round 17

Did anybody not read the Darkwynn's Corner: Unstoppable Blood Angels post on BoLS this week? If you didn't, let's just say that Darkwynn published what many would consider a bland, competitive list, that brought out the worst in all of the fluff bunnies who still don't seem to get it.

Friday Night Internet Fight, Round 16 Results show

It should come as no surprise to anybody who read last weeks fight that CLT40K pulled off the win by a long shot versus the clueless fluff bunny crowd. Does this mean that Dick Move is a haven for the Competitive- err what was you word for it Kennedy? Tactical?- gamer? Well whatever, I don't give a shit either way. So as expected, CLT40K came out of this shining with 51% of the 54 total votes as I, once again, rigged the polls against Kirby (with a paltry 7% vote for Tom Kirby). The only other competition came in the form of one Yakov Smirnoff with the "In Russia Poll Blogs You" choice weighing in at 33%. It's good to feel like we're giving him work. A few of the other fools got a single vote, so nice work this week everyone. Stay tuned for Round 17, if writing it doesn't kill me- yeah it's going to be epic if everything works out to plan and I can edit it properly.

Elysian List Review Part 00111: Heavy Support

This brings us to our final Chapter of the Elysian army list from Imperial Armour 8. Not too bad for 2 days work and no prior thought put into this, eh?

Elysian List Review Part Six: Fast Attack

Sweet, another section of the army where you're going to want to fill ever slot in the list. This is honestly my favorite part of the army and has several great units to choose from. Deciding what to take is going to be difficult.

Elysian List Review part V- the Dedicated Transport

This is where the Elysians really come into their own as an army. You only get one dedicated transport option and it's the Valkyrie.

Elysian List Review Part 4- Troops

Now we're off to the meat of the list, the troops section. This list trims a lot of the fat- yes, I'm looking your direction Conscrubs and Penile Legionnaires.

Elysian Army List Review Part C: The Elite

Next up in my review we have the L33T units to deal with. Veteran guard players all know that traditionally, you need to take the word "elite" with a grain of salt here. This slot has traditionally been a place to stick all your bullshit that has no home elsewhere. Thankfully, the 5th ed IG codex changed that somewhat and FW has carried that through to their Elysian list as well.

Elysian Army List Review Part Deux: HQ

Time to move on with the review to the HQ section of the list. There are many changes here versus Codex: IG. The main theme is that you have less choice and different weapons options with no special characters*.

IA8 Elysian List Review Part the First: Introduction and What's Unique

With the release of the feeble FAQ today, I have rekindled my enthusiasm for how awesome the new Elysian list in IA8 is. Prompted by some comments from Stelek, I decided that I'd try my hand at Dick Move's first (and likely only) ever Codex review.

IA 8 Revisited: FAQ off and Die!

As you may have guessed from the snappy title, the Imperial Armour Volume 8 FAQ was finally released, sort of.

Special Delivery

Hey kids, guess what showed up today.  Give up?  My forgeworld order.  Now I can get my Elysians up and running for real.  After almost a year of dicking around with them, I think I may be able to have them ready to go by early August.  I'll post pics when there done.

And remember those Chimera doors that they weren't going to ship me because they aren't making them anymore?  The ones that they already sent me other product to replace... Well looky what showed up in my box-

Now I'm all about getting free shit, but seriously GW/FW- if you need to hire a consultant to un-fuck your processes and best practices, that offer is still on the table; I'm not doing anything right now.

Friday Night Internet Fight, Round 16

This week Kirby got quite pissed off about this Heresy-Online post asking for a New Edition. So pissed, in fact that he rattled off a short, eloquent little rebuttal on 3++ is the New Black.

Friday Night Internet Fight, Round 15 Results Show

Huzzah, the polls came back on-line at some point over the last few days. That being said, it didn't really matter, because it was pretty clear who won that fight- NOBODY!

The Name Game Part II: Revenge of Blogger, this time it's personal

So big EFF U to blogger, as no polls are working. So FNIF is jacked up as is my poll about tank naming. I had a third poll up about the structure of FNIF, but you guys made it very clear what needs to happen: more titties.

We had enough votes in to get a pretty definitive winner of FNIF, so I'll announce that Friday as expected with or without a poll.

I don't think we got a good sample of naming my tanks yet, so use the comments section here if you have an opinion and I will add them to the scores as I remember them. If you don't have an opinion, do you have any good jokes?

I'm also a bit sad that nobody seems to have figured out the name theme yet- so hop to it guys.

Here are the choices of names for the tanks:

  1. Squealer
  2. Go Down
  3. Gone Shootin
  4. Kicked in the teeth
  5. Up to My Neck in You
  6. Breaking the Rules
  7. Snowballed
  8. Got you by the Balls
  9. Stiff Upper Lip

The Name Game

Just in case you were worried that I don't actually play or model, I'm going to throw something of a hobby article your way tonight.

Will This Be My Final Fantasy?

Looks like it's more or less official. The fluff bunnies have won the day. Just take a gander at this BoLS Lounge thread to see what I mean. As credible information has begun to leak out about the upcoming WFB 8th ed. release, two of my biggest fears have been confirmed:

Friday Night Internet Fight, Round 15

Has there ever been a rules discussion on a forum that doesn't end in a dick-waving, name-calling fight between bullies? Well as far as my research indicates the answer is "no."

Friday Night Internet Fight, Round 14 and Bonus Poll Results Show

Well this week went by fast. Sorry I kind of disappeared there for a bit. I wish I had some exciting story to tell you about what I did with my missing time: I was abducted by aliens or I was in Columbia battling drug lords with my crack team or mercenaries or something.

Set Sail for the High Accountanseas, Again

After writing up a couple of articles in support of GW's impending price increase, I got to thinking that maybe there was a simpler way to explain some of what's going on, without so much math.

Bonus Poll

Hey ya'll, since it appears to be Brent* Week all over the internet, I thought I'd jump on the Band waggon.

In the FNIF, Round 13 results thread Brent had this to say "I have a feeling I know what the subject is going to be for next week's Fight Night... I hope I win...)" I'm still not 100% certain what he's referring to**, but I'm pretty sure he had hopes of winning, based on his comment. I meant to put him in the poll for this week's FNIF for no reason. Looks like I forgot and by the time I remembered to add him, it was too late. Someone# had already voted and locked out my ability to edit the poll. So Brent, you're getting your own bonus poll this week. I hope you win too. So go vote, or justice dies.

Friday Night Internet Fight, Round 14

Well this might be a long one today. Just warning you ahead of time.

This week Smurfy went over to 40k online to pee in the kiddie pool.

Friday Night Internet Fight, Round 13 Results Show

The polls are closed and in spite of a tight race all week, you, the readers, have determined that I am an asshole. I will wear this badge with honor.

With 38% (22 votes) of the total votes this week it was determined that "No, Dethtron you are that big of an asshole." "Dethtron, you handsome devil" came up a close second after leading up until the very end of voting with 29% of the votes (17). No Time Wasters also made good showing, but failed to bring it home in spite of leading the polls for the first day or two that they were open. He ended with 9 votes (15%).

Thanks for voting and prepare yourselves for this week's fight.

Crystal Castles

Ontario Canada's Crystal Castles released their second full length "Crystal Castles (II)" on May 25th. It's pretty great. Funny thing is that the album actually leaked in April and managed to dominate a bunch of dance charts as an mp3 without an actual release.

I really don't know quite where to place these guys (or more specifically this guy, Kath, and a girl, glass). They're not really a dance group and the hipster kids love them. I don't know I guess the hipsters must be getting angry or something, because Crystal Castles sound a lot more like Atari Teenage Riot than Animal Collective. Hey speaking of !Atari, the band isn't named after the 1983 game. The name is actually a reference to the She-ra TV show.

So getting back to the sound, I guess you'll probably have to make your own judgement on this. It's kind of dancy, but with yelling and lots of really cool production techniques and really cheesy MIDI and 8-bit synths. They are capable of pulling off some vocal treatments that would make Skinny Puppy jealous.

In the short time they've been around, this band has been surrounded by controversy. They have been sued for copyright infringement on at least 3 occasions: once for art and twice for samples. To be honest their first album probably contained more sampled music than music created by the band. That being said, their second effort is much stronger musically and feels more like an album than their first record, which came off sort of like a random collection of singles and sound collages.

Well, here are some videos. Enjoy

Off the new record here's "Not in Love"

This is "Year of Silence" which is built on samples of Sigur Ros' "Inní mér syngur vitleysingur" wonder if you can guess why I like it so much....

Last here's a track off of their first album that I happen to like quite a bit, "Vanished"

From the Warp

There has been a recurring theme in the comments to my recent gloating about spending too much money and having some great FW customer service: warped parts. If you've ever gotten a FW kit you'll know what I'm talking about.

Spearhead Gives Players the Shaft?

If you haven't seen the rules for GW's newest 40k supplement, Spearhead, yet I have posted a quick rundown of the important bits over on the Chamber Militant forum. Now of course you have to understand before reading this post, I've yet to get in a game using the Spearhead rules, but feel like I'm still qualified to pass some kind of judgement on them.

Retail Win

For those of you reading from the US, you're probably returning to work today after your long Memorial Day weekend. I took some time off from the blog over the weekend myself, as Dr. Girlfriend wasn't on call for the first time in a good long while. Somehow all of my free time then materialized in reading lots of bad sci-fi and listening to a bunch of Gary Numan. There was also a super fun couple days of cleaning the house and gardening along with lots of grocery shopping and a small cookout for some friends and even a surprise band practice*.
