U Mad DJ?

Looks like it's two misses in a row for one of the newer BoLS writers.  Here's hoping for a 3rd strike, resulting in him being thrown off the site.  From the man who brought us the tale of chicken little explaining quite erroneously how the new* concept of true line of site is killing warhammer, we get a wonderfully terrible write up of why wound allocation is ruining the game.  Seriously, if there are so many forces conspiring against your ability to enjoy the game, maybe you should just quit.

Prepare to be Vanquished

We've all seen this thread.  Somebody asks for help picking the best load out for a Leman Russ.  Before you even read any further into the thread, you already know it's going to be packed to the gills with incredibly bad advice: the main battle tank is awesome, put sponsons on just about anything, lascannons are a great value, and my personal favorite- The Vanquisher is the best tank around.

The Tau of Sucking

After a series of recent tournament victories and what I can only assume is a rebirth of the golden age of robot suits, the lowly Tau seem to be coming back in popularity.  That's why in my daily dose of pain dealt out by Dakka Dakka my curiosity was peaked when I saw the "Tau In 5th" post that popped up recently.

These Special Characters are Special

I'll be honest. I've been keeping away from forums a little bit these last few weeks, because they were starting to drive me nuts. The idiocy of the masses combined with a growing sense of malaise and ennui about my life in general was really starting to manifest in me getting meaner rather than funnier. I'm feeling a little better now, so I hit up the retina burning power that is Warseer for some LOLs today. Seriously though- bright white text on a black background really hurts my eyes. Why would anybody choose such a scheme? So please Internet, stop using scheme like this or I will be forced to implement a pink and green scheme here to really put the hurt on.

Split Deployment: The Art of Throwing Half Your Army Away

I stumbled upon a post entitled "Split Deployment- the art of firepower" on Librarium last month. A lot of people have thrown a lot of praise at this article about splitting your force into two completely independent flanks. It's not entirely without merit and it took me a while to figure out exactly what didn't sit right with me about it. That being said, you wanna know the fucked up part? The "tactica" was written in 2007 for a different edition of the game and people are still sycophantically sucking off the guy who wrote it. This may have worked really well in 4th edition, but I really think that this is horribly inefficient for 5th. Hell if you didn't have an army that could assault, I'm pretty sure you'd have to do something like this to not get run into the ground in 4th. So in a rare move on my part there is no (or at least less than usual) offense intended for the original poster. This rant is directed at the yes men that still think this is valid advice.

Warhammervierziegtausendnovelle: jetzt noch mehr Mathe!

Every now and then I come across something that completely blows my tiny little mind. I don't mean this in a positive way either; what fun would that be?

Warfare on the High Accountanseas

At long last, I bring to you the other post that nearly became last last week's Internet fight. It's especially funny to me, since I just wrapped up my Managerial accounting class last week. Quite timely, indeed. You may not find this anywhere near as funny as I do, but I really don't care, this is my Blog. It's about me me me me me.

Burn in Hell You Racist Piece of Shit!!!!!!!

If you have the rare and amazing pleasure of knowing me in real life, you know that there isn't really much of anything that I believe in. If you don't know me, well, now you know. For better or worse, I honestly don't really give a shit. One of the (admittedly few) positive side effects of this is that it takes a lot to get me really mad.

The Mission, again....

I'm beginning to think that I may need to write some kind of a brand/vision statement about this blog and pin it up top.

Here's a comment that came in from anonymous today in the leafblower post:

...and the leafblower you rode in on!

So I'll let you all in on a little secret: in spite of having a high speed Internet connection since 1999, I've never really had the opportunity to spend too much time on the Internet.

Warseer makes me has a sad :(

In a Warseer post entitled "GWS Ironic Balancing Act" Elvinltl rages against the evils of codex creep in a post that ironically contains exactly the same amount of real irony as Alanis Morissette's "Ironic."* Thanks to Lauby for e-mailing me this bit of silliness. Read below to see what happens when an idiot with less than no understanding of how businesses operate attempts to act as a consultant for GW.

Stormtroopers

I'm sitting around recovering from a mild and highly embarrassing bout of food poisoning. This has given me lots of time to stare mindlessly into the Internet* for the day. Haven't been able to dredge up anything awful or get my panties into knot about anything major, but got sucked into a thread about the usefulness of IG Stormtroopers on Warseer. There's actually a fair amount of decent advice in the thread as well as an amusing debate about whether they are a surgical strike (scalpel) unit or a suicide unit. I vote on the former myself. I'm not likely to bring my troopers off the shelf all too often, but I've never exactly regretted taking on the rare occasions that I have. They have proved moderately useful at both MEQ and tank busting, so can usually make their (extremely high) points cost back for me.

Once I got a little deeper into the thread though, I stumbled across this gem:

definetly don't give them a transport, they're more flexible whitout it (and
not too expensive)

Look out, serious logic fail. Their cost is precisely why they need a fly ride (or flying ride) dumbass. If they aren't deep-striking or infiltrating, they'll need something to keep their asses alive, cause we all know they'll get shot to shit if they're not wrapped in a candy coating of vehicle.

Plus, having the option to be mounted doesn't detract from their flexibility at all. Give them a chimera (a good idea)- you can still deepstrike or infiltrate them if you feel the need, just don't deploy them in their chimera. As a bonus, having an extra chimera floating around could be useful for ride swapping (for ISTs, grey knights, etc.) Same goes for putting them inside
Valkyries/Vendettas (also a good idea). This doesn't limit their flexibility, but increases it, all from the warm nougaty center of a transport that is a killing machine by itself.

The Best Leman Russ or the Worst Advice?

I used to get quite a lot of information from the chaps over at boot camp. Prior to the release of the newest IG codex, it even seemed that most of it was good. Something about the 5th ed book has confused all the site's members greatly. Here's what I mean: "What is the Best Leman Russ Tank?"

Starry eyed Jack42494 has just awoken on a frosty, idyllic Christmas morning to find that Santa has left him money in his stocking hung above the hearth with care. He is chomping at the bit to put this towards a new tank. He's even smart enough to admit that he can't decide which tank he wants- we guard are spoiled for choice, after all. Unfortunately, he decides to ask his question on Boot Camp.

The first response pretty much sets the tone. Torquemoda, from Latvia, says that there is no best Leman Russ. Sadly, this may be the only response here with a modicum of truth to it. On the plus side, he challenges anyone that thinks the punisher is good to come to Latvia and fight him. Later in the thread someone offers to take him up on his offer and they get into a fantastic argument. It ends in Torquemada telling the other guy that in spite of being 100 pounds lighter, he will kick his ass since he was born in Soviet Russia (?)- in Soviet Russia post trolls you! The post is worth reading for that alone.

Anyhow, the thread goes on for 4 pages or so and nobody asks a single question of the poster, to figure out what kind of vehicle he really needs. Nobody asks if he is playing a mobile game, what other units he brings, if he needs a generalist tank or a specialized one, or any other questions. Instead everyone jumps up on their fucking soapbox to preach to him about why they vote for their favorite tank.

The consensus of the thread seems to be that the main battle tank variant is the superior, decked out with a lascannon and bolter sponsons no less. Yay points sinks. Yay for putting an expensive single shot, piece of shit lascannon on a WS3 unit. Most of the posters seem to think that it is the most generalized tank and therefore the best. It may be the most general, but it's genericness makes it ok at several things and good at nothing. Not the best use of points. It gets even worse when people start talking about how good the vanquisher is and that it's the best tank out there. So we go from the least to the most specialized tank...nice.

I believe that there is only one person who even mentions the Demolisher (my choice as best all around) and not a single person mentions flamers. So damn awful. Worse still, everyone seems to want to put sponsons on everything. OOh, my tank is now more expensive, is harder to get in cover, and encourages me not to move. Real win-win situation there. Hint, if you take a Demolisher with a heavy flamer and no sponsons it is cheap, will not tempt you to camp, and provides an answer to most threats.

The thing that really gets me is how bad some of Wodonthewargod's advice is. He's generally regarded as something of a tank guru over there and I can't figure out how the hell he got his reputation. See for yourselves, click that Leman Russ tactica link he gives. It's not all bad, but it's barely good.

I think I'll just be going to Boot Camp for their WiP and Gallery sections. Those are usually pretty high quality.

How BoLS Didn't Get its Game Back

Sweet merciful crap! BoLS, take a look at your user comments and adapt. You always praise Privateer Press for listening to their target market- maybe you should do the same. I know that half of your deal now is to make controversial posts that drive user comments which in turn drives your ad revenue, but come the fuck on. By having contributors like Robin fucking Reece you are setting the hobby back years and are going to start losing readers. Maybe you should change your operating model back to giving useful advice.

I swear to god I didn't set out with the mission to rip on BoLS on a daily basis, but they make it so hard not to these days. Especially when they decide to bring Robin back for round 2 of his epic series on failing at life: "Winning with Eldar in 5th Edition Part 2" What's professor Reece have for us today? Mechanized Eldar- great that's hard to fuck up, load up on firedragons, fireprisms, and waveserpents and go to town. Well somehow he figured out how to do it though and gives us a list with 1 big ass firedragon squad, some howling banshees, striking scorpions (wtfuck man?), and a bunch of jetbikes. Well at least there are 3 fire prisms in there right. Check it out. It's incredibad.

So, his list writing is shit. Maybe his tactical advice is better. HA- it's not. Favorite quote:

The first thing to consider when making a list in 5th edition in my opinion
is always the same: how will I win games?

....and the first question I have for you is: how the fuck do you win games?

Well Robin, thanks for not explaining how the hell your firedragons are going to live long enough to take out heavy armor. Oh you couldn't explain it because they won't. Thanks for not explaining how this army can even deal with heavy armor- fireprisms and a lone firedragon squad are not the answer. If I were using this list and somebody plopped down a pair of land raiders, I would run to the hills. He also doesn't bother to explain how his unsupported jetbikes are going to make it through the game to hold an objective other than making sure you tank shock threats out of their way or hide them. He can't even explain the tactical decision that lead him to take 2 close combat aspect squads or how he intends to use them. All the real tactical advice he gives on that front is to use your prisms to pop transports (but wait didn't you say your prisms were going after heavy targets...oh no) and charge your aspect warriors in. Why bother doing that if you could stay out of harms way and shoot them?

There is a useful nugget of info buried in there about target saturation being a good thing. It is, unfortunately you don't have any. To succeed at target saturation you would really need to have more skimmers and more redundant units, by which I mean 3 smaller units of firedragons. As it stands now, he presents nothing but obvious, easy to deal with targets. Robin, do yourself a favor and learn some sound tactics and focus on your lists before you present yourself as a scholar of 40k. If you're going to present a fluff army, state that it is. Don't masquerade some clusterfuck of a list as a competetive entry, that is just embarassing.

Dick Move UK

Cheers mates! In honor of me old cock sparrer Hoagy* and the fact that today's cack is coming from an article on the UK's 40k forums.com, today's dick move is going to be translated into British.

In an entry that is otherwise full of useful bits and bobs for newer gamers, some berk by the name of angelofblades brings some truly awful advice to us towards the end.

It's important to have roles for every unit in your army, do not fall under the threat of having all your units the capability of doing multiple things. The first problem with that is that it can lead to your units being very expensive. The second is that it often can't do it as effectively, as if you had designed another unit to perform that task to the maximum effectiveness. For example, do not mix an attack bike unit with 2 HB's and a MM, go full MM or full HB's. Or the more classic one is people who like to have close combat unit blow up tanks, like Assault Marines. Just because they can take a melta bomb, doesn't mean they have to. Leave the anti-armour to the units best suited to dealing with armour, and keep the close combat for infantry and/or MC's. Something like assault marines charging armour should always be a last recourse, when all other options have been exhausted.
You sir, are a complete bell-end**. Giving a unit the ability to tackle multiple tasks is the cat's pyjamas. Now over specializing will get you topped, but giving a unit the ability to handle multiple threats is a great thing. Your units should have the ability to deal with infantry as well as armour. This is why you should equip landspeeders with the MM/HF or Typhoon/MM combos. Just because a unit can take three meltas doesn't always mean it should. Is it going to see action on the front? Try dropping a melta for a single flamer. Now you can deal with those pesky ground pounders. Giving your units some versatility an duality will make sure that you always have something to do with them.
Sound of in the comments and let us know what you think of this ponce.

Flame On- Tau?

I got an e-mail from number6* earlier today pointing me in the direction of a known troll, Rikimaru, who has posted all kinds of horrible bullshit over on Librarium Online. Man, he is responsible for some good stuff. But by good stuff I mean mind numbingly bad stuff. He appears to be either retarded or executing the most brilliant misinformation campaign ever put into action.

Rikimaru started a thread called "The Torch Squad: Don't Believe everything you hear," in which he extols the virtues of putting flamers on your Tau Battlesuits. You can check out the whole thread over here, but I'll pick out the choicest bits for you to look at and ridicule.

So flamers! A subject of much controversy mainly because the Flamer is a very much misunderstood weapon system. The new Nids codex made me realise just how valuable the unit can be in the Tau army and I with this in mind I wanted to try to clear up some misconceptions about the Flamer on the XV8 and as a consequence also look at the state of play regarding Tau list building.

Wait, did you just say that flamers are misunderstood? Huh? Stop me if I'm wrong, but I think that this is how a flamer is used on the battlefield: get really close to your enemy and bathe as many as possible in cleansing fire, especially when your target is in cover. Is he also saying that you need to bring flamers against Tyranids? Wow, that's fucking brilliant, please allow me get right next to a unit that really wants to assault me and do a little bit of damage to it. Plus it's the big stuff you need to worry about with Tyranids, anyway. If you don't have enough raw firepower to deal with the little shit, you need to go back to Tau school. Since you seem to be unfamiliar with how your favorite army works, you might want to read about it in this thing called a codex. There you will find that all of your shit is bristling with anti-infantry firepower. Have you even looked at the pulse rifle's stat line for fuck's sake?

First thing to discuss is twin linked vs single flamer. The first and most important rule for taking Flamers on the XV8 is this ‘take two’. Twin linked Flamers offer a fantastic advantage, they re-roll all missed wounds. Now how many weapons can you think of in 40K that do not need to roll to hit and re-roll ALL failed wounds?

I actually just facepalmed. That really happened. If you put two close ranged weapons on a battlesuit, you're not only guaranteeing that you will be raped in an assault, but also that you will be reducing your overall fire output for the entire game. See there are costs besides points costs in 40k. This happens to be an issue of opportunity cost here. By not putting a ranged weapon on your unit, you are costing yourself balanced firepower over the course of the game. At least put plasma or a missile on there so that you can fire while you're waiting to get into flamer range. Plus instead of just being able to deal with infantry, you can smoke light vehicles and transports. That's called duality, or as I like to call it- not overspecializing your army into uselessness. Also, if you read the whole post, you'll note that he manages to contradict himself and suggest putting a missile launcher on your flamer suits.

number6 sums up nicely why this advice is horrible right here:
In "vacuum analysis", the TL flamer is a fantastic weapon for all the reasons you spell out.

But in the context of a Tau army, I really find it a suboptimal choice. I see no reason to put crisis suits -- very nearly the most important unit in the entire Tau army -- within 2" or 3" of the enemy. You are just asking for such units to die unless absolutely everything goes your way.

So it's not the TL flamer itself that I object to. It's the tactics required to reap the benefits of the TL flamer that I object to. I don't think they suit the Tau army very well at all. The only Tau units you should actually allow to get close to the enemy are piranha, Kroot, and any other units you might intend or need to sacrifice during the course of a game (e.g., one of your Devilfish/FW units).

There isn't a single Tau unit that can take a beating. Not one. So I find the idea of putting Tau units into harm's way that aren't slated for blocking/delaying/sacrificial duty (most of the army list, of course) ... a strange, odd, and counterproductive one. Why would our wussy tau ever look to unnecessarily risk themselves? I seriously just don't get it.

number6 pretty much hits the nail on the head there. The only thing I would have done differently myself is to resort to personal attacks and name calling. I would have said something like: 'Rikimaru, you should do us all a favor and stop polluting the interwebs with your shit advice, penis breath.' Now that is how you start an Internet fight.

Rikimaru then responds with more insanity to number6's reply and says the following regarding getting too close to the enemy with your battlesuits:
Which is why you do not simply put any unit in harms way. Did you actually read the article or just scan it because the point of the Torch is it can and does provide ranged firepower and the Flamers are there (rememeber that 18pts of Flamers) to provide highly effective firepower to kill anything that does get close. Again you are stuck in the mind set of Flamer equipped XV8's must always be played at close range, it is their main role, wrong! the Torch squad is first and foremost a ranged unit but it is equally as effective at close range. The Flamer is more effective against a wider range of units that a Fireknife at cloase range and against units in cover BUT it also provides extrremely effective ranged firepower.

Well he probably didn't read the whole article because you are a pompous windbag. Christ, you're almost as long-winded as I am. Good for a blog, maybe. Good for a forum, fuck no. This is also yet another point where Rikimaru contradicts his own advice and speaks of using your battlesuits at range, in spite of his earlier advice to equip them for close up confrontations. So now he's giving you a ranged unit that has reduced ranged firepower to give it very situational close up firepower. If this situation that he is planning for comes about, the flamers will probably not save you, you're already doomed.

*ahhhh number6, sexiest of the androids. Except that based on our e-mail correspondence this number6 appears to be a dude. Oh well....

A Sensitive Subject

Race is always a difficult subject to deal with, especially here in the states where we can't seem to let it go. The problem is most people take the issue way too far in one direction or another. Case in point, I was once in a class where a student claimed that the US treasury was racist because Lincoln is on the penny (the lowliest of coins) and his face is pointing the opposite direction of the face on every other coin. Well that's a stretch and a half if you ask me.

Fortunately, the issue rarely creeps in the gaming community, unless you count those Nazi space marines floating around the Internetz. Digging back into the vault, I was super surprised, however, to find a blog post from Australia that goes in exactly the opposite direction over on Crimitism. A friend of mine came across this a while back while searching for some info on Salamanders and shared it with me.

Have you read the article yet? Good. Now on the surface, this doesn't look to be some crackpot conspiracy theory kind of bullshit, but I think that this aggravates me more. What bothers me is that this is just too much of a stretch.

There are two main issues that Richie brings up in his post - 1) GW must be racist because most of their miniatures are white and their fluff adheres to stereotypes 2) The retconned Salamanders are racist because their "blackness" is defined as a mutation and makes them monstrous.

To the first point, it has been theorized in many circles that most of the arts stem from our surroundings. In music, for example, the earliest forms stemmed from the imitation of local animals. For the Australians out there, think about the Didgeridoo. This instrument is primarily employed in mimicking animal noises when not being used to make droning noises. In more recent history, we have a lot of groups in the industrialized world that make use of machinery, sampled conversations/city noise, etc in making music. Our creative property is, then, a product of our surroundings.

What's my point? Well, the UK is around 85% white and only about 2% black. So, with that context, most of the people responsible for GW are writing/painting/designing/drawing what they know. Do you think that if GW had been started in China there would be any white people in their games? If you don't want an all white army don't paint them that way. I've seen a pretty cool IG army based on Jamaican iconography that's kind of fun, and my own Guard are a mixed fighting force in more ways than one.

In regards to the racist fluff and stereotyping I have little to say. Richie says that units like the thousand suns stereotype Egyptian culture and the white scars are stereotypically Mongolian. I would argue, rather, that they are invoking iconographic images from the past to help players find a reference point within the universe that has been created.

Lastly, Richie argues that mutating into a dark skin color and subsequent demonification of the Salamanders is racist. So here's a fun fact, skin color (in all shades) IS A MUTATION. If you don't want to get into the hard science side of this, basically the more sunlight your part of the world gets, the darker your skin will be. Darker* skin reflects more light than light skin and helps to regulate production of Vitamin D, which is created in a process linked to sunlight and is toxic in large quantities. So Salamanders mutating due to an environmental anomaly makes perfect sense.

As far as the demonization of the Salamanders is concerned, look at their partners in the universe. The space wolves are savage, violent, and untamed, not to mention blatantly based on Norse legend. Blood angels are insane and scary and white. Dark Angels are white and almost evil and so on. My point is, it is silly to even bring race into this argument, as the 40k universe blurs the distinctions between good and evil for all it's races/armies. Even though some chapters embrace the beast within, space marines as a whole are about as close to good guys as you'll find in 40k. This isn't some kind of Joseph Conrad "Heart of Darkness" situation here. The Salamanders aren't scary because they're evil and black, but because they are gigantic genetically modified people who are sort of on our side.

At the end of the day, the most important thing to remember before reading too deep into issue of race in the world of Games Workshop is that you're playing a game that involves moving toy soldiers around. Don't take it too seriously. And if that's not good enough for you, your minis are a blank canvas that you can express anything you want on.

Chime in!
===================================================================================
*The eskimoes are an exception to this. They live in an area with little sunlight, but historically ate a nearly 100% meat based diet, making sunlight induced vitamin D unnecessary.

Percentages are Back?

Here is a rumor that appears to be gaining a bunch of momentum from that really vocal minority of people who are wrong and is currently preventing me from working on my managerial accounting homework. Percentages are back in Warhammer Fantasy army building. Really, that's a throwback that isn't too likely to show up again. This has hit pretty much every blog/forum under the sun, so for the sake of argument I have arbitrarily chosen this "Plastic Legions" post that lists this along with a pretty decent summary of other rumors that are flying around.

Full Disclosure
The last time I had a chance to play WFB, this was actually a rule in the game. We also played a card game during the magic phase and had to walk up hill through the snow just to get to the game store. I've been working on painting up some Empire and Skaven forces, but shelved the projects as soon as I found out that 8th ed WFB was on its way, just in case the rules changes are drastic enough to make me want to change my army composition. Sprues are better than assembled and painted minis for this; just ask all of my sweet 4th ed carnifexes about how life is currently working out for them.

So here is the actual rumor, in case you don't want to click the above link:
Army construction is moving back to percentages. (you may have 25% of your points spent on heroes, 25%-50% on core… etc.)

Now here is why this rumor sucks:

Unbalance in Balance
A rule like this would obviously be an attempt to balance the power of certain units like characters, monsters, war machines, etc. Doing this would actually fuck up the whole system, though. For some armies it might mean that You only get 1 or 2 characters where you could have had 3 or 4 or more before. On the other side of the spectrum other armies :cough: Skaven, could fit an almost limitless number of cheap characters into their lists. Here is my unit of Skaven slaves with a front rank made up of Warlock Engineers. At 2250 points you could fit 37 Warlocks into your list sans upgrades, in case you were wondering. At the end of the day, I think that all this would do is cause a return to herohammer for some armies, while castrating other armies like Warriors of Chaos. This has about the same likelihood to occur as the world ending in 2012.

Have you read the newer army books?
In case you've been living under a rock for the past year, WFB has seen a bunch of top shelf army books released as of late. What's more these have a bunch of rules that contradict or alter current 7th ed convenions. Do you think this might be setting a tone for things to come? Well take a look at template weapons in the new books and tell me if you think partial hits are in 8th ed or not. Anyway, back on topic, look at any WFB army book and see if you can find any information about force composition. I'll wait....oh you found it...let me check your work. I'll just grab a recent book, shit why not just grab the most recent, "Beastmen." Well let's see now....found it. Right there on page 81; 2 charts spelling out how to choose an army and characters. Do you really think that GW will set out to invalidate a rule standard that is presented in every single one of their in print books? Shit, look at a book that's been around for a long time, like Codex Witch Hunters (now 2 editions behind the curve), and you might be surprised to see how little in the book has been made obsolete by the current 5th ed 40k book. Yes, there are a few things that don't exactly translate into the new edition like some pistol rules, but my point is that GW has gone to great lengths to make sure they will never have to do a full reboot. Under their current system, by sticking to the same general conventions like Universal Special Rules and the like, they can spread out the release of new army books and codices over a greater period of time. For their effort, this will help them achieve steadier sales volumes and grow their business over time. Making a sweeping change like this would instantly invalidate every single WFB book and call for a simutaneous reboot or at least a reprint of everything. Do you really think that this is going to happen if GW is still publishing new books with the current army composition rules in them?

There you have it. Hopefully this will ease some of your concerns about this bullshit rumor. So, If you have an all Stegadon army, are rocking 2 Steam Tanks, or whatever, I wouldn't get my panties in a knot, all is well. If, however, I am wrong I will make good on a promise I made to Laubersheimer Industries and eat an entire rank of spearmen.

Chime in. Let me know how you feel about this.

"lurk moar"
